Botswana: More Than a Safari Destination

One of the most popular African tourist destinations, Botswana is favored by adventurous sightseers. Although Botswana safaris are highly-rated, the country has much to offer business and vacation travelers.

As the second-largest game reserve in the world, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve offers an enormous area to explore. Four rivers wind their way through the reserve. Small valleys hold natural salt pans. Cheetahs and leopards chase a number of wild game animals. The land is mostly flat, allowing tourists with physical limitations to travel relatively easily.

The first national park created by Botswana’s government, Chobe National Park contains an enormous variety of game animals. With four distinct ecosystems, Chobe National Park is an excellent choice for tourists who are only staying in the country for a short time.

Inside the park, the Chobe Riverfront area is a major watering hole. It attracts a number of rare bird species as well as larger animals like elephants and giraffes. The Savuti Marsh was once a large lake until it dried out into its current marsh state. Tourists often visit the Savuti Marsh for the zebras’ annual migration. The Linyanti Marsh holds crocodiles and hippopotamuses, while the Nogatsaa grassland has significant numbers of elands.

The Moremi Game Reserve is located primarily within the Okavango Delta. Tourists have the opportunity to tour through the reserve by off-road vehicle or by traditional dugout canoe. The endangered African wild dog can be seen within the Moremi Game Reserve. Nearly 500 different species of wild birds also inhabit the area around the delta, making the reserve a frequent stop for birdwatchers.

When it comes to traveling through sub-Saharan Africa, there is much more to do besides Botswana safaris. Whether a business traveler or a vacationing family, Botswana maintains a sterling reputation for welcoming visitors to the country.
